rhino text
"I am alone and they are all together."
Rhinoceroses are loose in the streets. Berenger does not care. While the citizenry
fails to make heads (horns) or tails out of an increasingly chaotic
situation, our hero begins to realize that everybody around him is
gradually changing into pachyderms. Considered by many to be Ionesco’s
finest play, Rhinoceros tracks one man’s lonely efforts to hang onto
his humanity, while everyone around him abandons theirs.
“Gelman handles the escalating action with aplomb [and] the nine-member ensemble, wearing abstract white rhino masks, deliver the absurdity intact, faithful to the source.”
-Lawrence Bommer, Chicago Stage Style
"Eerie and delightful…this piece will make you scratch your head and think for a while after you’ve left the theater.”
-J.H. Palmer, Chicago Theater Beat
